With the overuse of CAD\/CAM in today’s shop … users creating cutting programs using CAD\/CAM widely consider themselves to be “CNC programmers”. The TRUTH is that the end result of “programming” with CAD\/CAM is … wait for it … G code.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Creating G code manually form scratch is a big ask and a big time waster … so having CAM to create the “base” G code is great. But you must have the ability to read it … understand it … and be able to tweak and adjust it is ESSENTIAL to being a REAL CNC programmer.<\/p>

On the shop floor … in the real world … for example … changing the size of a chamfer requires the ability to read and understand G code. Having to go back to the CAM system to re-post G code to adjust the chamfer is ridiculous. Changing the depth of a drilling cycle or the amount of each peck … you’re not going to re-post for that !!<\/p>
